Precision in Complexity: Robotic Hysterectomy for a High-Risk Patient

Dr. Gayathri Dinesh Kamath Aug 29, 2025

A 42-year-old woman, weighing 130 kg and with a history of hypertension, diabetes, and two previous caesarean sections, presented at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road with heavy menstrual bleeding. Detailed evaluation revealed multiple fibroids, which had caused severe anemia, requiring repeated blood transfusions.

Clinical Challenge

Performing hysterectomy surgery in such patients is often complex. Obesity, co-existing health conditions, and prior surgical scars significantly increase the risk of complications in conventional surgery. For this patient, the team opted for a robotic-assisted hysterectomy, which provided the precision and safety required to manage this challenging case effectively.

The Procedure

The robotic hysterectomy was carried out with minimal blood loss and excellent surgical precision, despite the complexity of her condition. The advanced 3D vision, wristed instruments, and enhanced control offered by robotic technology allowed the surgical team to operate with accuracy while minimizing risks.

Recovery and Outcomes

The patient’s recovery was smooth:

  • Early return of bowel function
  • Minimal postoperative pain
  • Short hospital stay
  • Quick discharge without complications

Today, she is doing well, free from the burden of repeated transfusions and the discomfort caused by fibroids.

Why Robotic Surgery?

This case highlights the advantages of robotic-assisted hysterectomy in high-risk patients:

  • Reduced blood loss
  • Minimal injury to surrounding organs
  • Faster recovery and discharge
  • Improved patient comfort
  • Safe and effective outcomes even in complex surgical scenarios

Transforming Women’s Health with Robotics

Robotic surgery is proving to be a game-changer in gynecological care, especially for women with complex conditions, obesity, or previous surgical history. By combining surgical expertise with advanced technology, it ensures safer procedures, quicker recovery, and better quality of life for patients.
